During this workshop, participants will examine social emotional competence and how it impacts school readiness. The Mariposa approach begins with the understanding that the high level of stress with which children live today present not only serious issues with respect to their behavior and academic achievement, but undermine their general health and ability to function. This training provides an overview of current theory and research explaining why children struggle and how to help them succeed in today’s world. Research has shown that a substantive, caring relationship with an adult is a child’s best protection against the negative effects of high levels of ongoing stress. It is also the key to helping a child develop the social-emotional competency needed to succeed in school and in life.
